The wind was light at Kanaha until past midday today. Grey overcast skies
made it look generally crap out there however we heard a rumour that there
was wind over the other side of the island at Kihei. So instead of mincing
around at Kanaha we decided to drive over to take a look.
But Kihei was windless. Not a breath. And what a dump. We drove straight
back to Kanaha to find...
Honking!!! WTF!?! How could it be suddenly so windy here yet flat calm only
10 miles away...???
Well thank feck we did return as Kanaha delivered a stonker of a session.
Sailed for 3 hours non-stop without a break. 4.5 was perfection from
beginning to end. I want to marry my Superfreak. The swell was smaller but
some half-mast sets were still pushing in and much much cleaner than the
past few days. (I'm coming to the conclusion that Lowers can't hold
anything bigger than half-mast.) Perfect go-for-it conditions. Tried loads
of stuff. Long mellow drawn out turns, short snappy cut backs, aerials,
floaters...soooo much fun. Scored probably my best wave of the trip so far,
a solid 5 turn head-higher that had me screaming with childish excitement
as I kicked off. I was getting pretty knackered towards the end and my
sailing was suffering as a result but I kept on picking out the set waves
so could not stop. Eventually fatigue and the (relatively...) chilly temps
got the better of me. And now I'm spent.
10 in a row. More please. :)
